We currently maintain more than 80 cameras across construction yards and quarries, some sites more than 1,500 kilometres from our base in Maputo. If those years have taught us one thing, it is this: a CCTV system designed for offices dies on a construction yard within months. Abrasive dust, vibration, constant power cuts, and distances no cable covers gracefully. These are the six points that, in practice, decide whether industrial site surveillance works or not.
Everyone thinks about the lenses. The real problem is the connectors. At one of the quarries we maintain, the monthly reports began showing intermittent signal drops in one zone; when the team opened the junction boxes, they found connectors oxidised by the fine dust that gets into anything not properly sealed. We replaced them, resealed, and since that intervention the site has not recorded a single technical failure. IP66-rated cameras or better are the minimum; well-sealed junction boxes and periodic connector inspections are what keep the system alive.
At our Tete sites, when the monthly reports show interruptions, the cause is almost always the same: power cuts, not equipment failure. That is why an industrial site gets a dedicated UPS for the recorder and switches, surge protection, and circuits separated from the heavy machinery. It does not eliminate the cuts — it guarantees the system shuts down cleanly and resumes recording on its own when power returns.
Running cable to a perimeter pole on an active yard, with open trenches and machines moving, is often unworkable. The standard solution is dedicated point-to-point wireless links — proper antennas, not office Wi-Fi. We have installed several this year, including a recent expansion where a new pole with a PTZ camera connects to the recorder exclusively over wireless. With line of sight and stable power, it works; our reports show uptimes above 99% on sites served this way.
On a remote site, video should record locally — if the link drops, recording continues. What we do remotely is verification: every day, the connectivity of each camera and the state of the recordings; every month, a per-site report with measured uptime. The client does not have to believe the system works. They see the numbers.
Perimeter and gates first. Then fuel storage, the machine park, warehouses. A PTZ on a high point covers an entire yard and costs 4 to 5 times a fixed camera — it earns its keep when it replaces three fixed units, not when it is looking the wrong way at the wrong moment. Fixed cameras guard the critical points precisely because they never turn away.
Our regime on industrial contracts: operational tests and recording checks every month, detailed quarterly inspection, a full review of cables and connectors twice a year, and an annual audit. It sounds like a lot until you price a week of lost recordings on a site holding millions in equipment. This routine is what sustains the numbers we publish — it is all in this case study, with uptime measured site by site.
